Edgewater Apartments is just steps from Philadelphia’s most beloved road, Benjamin Franklin Parkway, and residents know just how awesome and convenient that is. The Parkway kind of acts like a bridge, disrupting Philly’s typical grid format to connect two of the city’s true epicenters of culture, City Hall and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. All along its mile-long stretch, visitors indulge in its many museums and sights, including the Franklin Museum, Moore College of Art and Design, Cathedral Basilica of St. Peter and Paul, Logan Circle, the Free Library of Philadelphia, Rodin Museum, and much more. Originally constructed as part of an urban renewal plan in 1917, this year the Benjamin Franklin Parkway turns one hundred years old and in typical Philadelphia-fashion there are plenty of festivities in store.
The celebration kicks off on Friday, September 8th with the Parkway 100 We Are Connected Festival. This event is huge and actually offers 100 free and family friendly activities for attendees to try out. Most major attractions on the Parkway will have free admission during this event as well. Some other highlights of the We Are Connected Festival include a mural unveiling, live music from local artists, and giant “dot-to-dot” puzzles created by artist, David Kalvitis, that visitors can work together to complete.
The fun doesn’t end there, it lasts 14-months! Parkway 100 continues through November 16th of 2018 and it’s packed with activities that honor the road’s rich history and the cities culture. One of the more exciting aspects of the collective is a number of new art installations that will be put on display throughout the anniversary. There will also be a re-release of Building the City Beautiful, David Brownlee’s acclaimed book about the Parkway and several exhibitions throughout the museum district with related exhibitions. Stay tuned for more information about this exciting event and upcoming programs throughout the year.
