happy family over city christmas tree and snow

While we all don’t like to admit it, the holidays can sometimes be a taxing time on the wallet. That’s why it’s so important to find some December fun you can have with the whole family that won’t break the bank. Edgewater residents are lucky, there’s a lot of great stuff going on in the neighborhood and a lot of them are walking distance if you don’t mind the cold weather. Here’s a quick list of free fun activities you can check out this month. Keep things festive, but go easy on your finances.

Comcast Holiday Spectacular – One of the most recognizable buildings in the Philadelphia skyline is the Comcast Center. The average person won’t find a lot of reasons to visit this new icon, but during the holidays the lobby is opened to the public for a free show you won’t want to miss. The Comcast Holiday spectacular features a musical journey on one of the world’s largest, highest resolution LED screens. Enjoy classics like Jingle Bell Rock, Carol of the Bells, The Nutcracker and The Twelves Days of Christmas in bright color with hundreds of other excited spectators.

Christmas Light Show at Macy’s – Indulge in one of the city’s oldest holiday traditions. The Christmas light show has been delighting holiday shoppers for over half a century. Located in the grand atrium of what was once the historic Wanamaker building, the display is accompanied by an exquisite organ performance and narration from Julie Andrews. Showtimes are at 10 am, 12 pm, 2 pm, 4 pm, 6 pm, and 8 pm. Also, visit the Dicken Christmas Village and check out the famous holiday display windows.

Dilworth Park Wintergarden – For an array of activities, you have to check out Wintergarden at Dilworth Park and City Hall. Visitors can enjoy the magnificent Christmas tree, America’s Garden Capital Maze, and Deck the Hall Light Show. For a small fee, you can grab some skates and ride around the Rothman Ice Rink or maybe grab a hot cocoa at the pop-up Rothman Cabin. Everything in this area is beautiful this time of year, and well worth a scenic walk around with friends. Nearby is Christmas Village, a great spot to pick out a gift for someone you love.
