Celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Philly

How are you planning to celebrate Cinco de Mayo? If you don’t want to travel too far from your Edgewater apartment, you’re in luck, as there are lots of local bars where you can get great deals on everything from tacos to tequila to mark the Mexican holiday.

While only history buffs may know this, the occasion commemorates Mexico’s victory over France in a key 1862 battle—but it has become a significant cultural celebration where people around the world embrace Mexico’s festive, colorful traditions. Here in the United States, the holiday is a big partying day, with bars full of revelers in sombreros and clinking margaritas. Cinco de Mayo falls on a Saturday this year, so the party is sure to be bigger and better than ever!

If you want to join in, here are a few local spots for Cinco de Mayo festivities:

El Rey: One of the city’s most popular Mexican cantinas is just a half-mile from your Edgewater apartment! From famed restauranteur Stephen Starr, El Rey features authentic Mexican, kitschy and colorful décor and enough tequila to make your head spin! (To the effect of 40-plus different types!)

Distrito: This University City hot spot, 1.5 miles from your Edgewater apartment, offers happy hour every day of the week, including Saturdays! Specials from 5-7 p.m. include $5 margaritas and nachos. Once you’ve had your fill of both, round up your crew and warm up your voices for the karaoke room.

Tequilas Restaurant: If you want to add a dash of sophistication to your Cinco de Mayo celebration, head to Tequilas, about one mile from your Edgewater apartment. Creative cuisine and cocktails, including lots of tequila-based concoctions, are made even more enjoyable by the elegant ambiance, including chandelier lighting.
