Tall Ships Take Over Philly

If you dream of setting sail for adventure this summer, indulge that fantasy right here in Philly!

While the City of Brotherly Love isn’t known as a sailing capital, it will be on Memorial Day Weekend for an international sailing festival featuring “Tall Ships” from around the world. Sail Philadelphia sets off May 24 and runs until May 28 at Penn’s Landing, 2.5 miles from your Edgewater apartment.

The Tall Ships visit Philadelphia every few years to the delight of aquatic fanatics and novices. This year’s festival features nine towering sailboats, which will dock at Penn’s Landing. The vessels hail from spots around the world and range in size from 53 to 293 feet. The largest of the visiting ships will be open for tours so visitors can learn firsthand how the massive vessels navigate the waters. Even for non-sailing enthusiasts, climbing aboard an enormous ship and snapping selfies with the Philly skyline in the background can make for quite an adventurous afternoon.

If you want even more adventure, hop onto a Sail-Away Cruise. Several of the Tall Ships will be ferrying visitors up and down the Delaware River in 90- and 120-minute cruises. Get the full feeling of what it’s like to set sail while enjoying picturesque views of the sunset during the twilight tours.

If you’re prone to seasickness and prefer to keep your feet firmly planted on the dry ground, there’s plenty to see and do at Penn’s Landing. The Waterfront Festival features live music, family-friendly programing, vendors selling gifts of all sorts, including many with a nautical theme, and a riverside beer garden. Tickets to the festival include same-day admission to the adjacent International Seaport Museum, which tells Philadelphia’s storied history as a port city. Here you can learn more about the role the Delaware River played in international trade and even in the founding of the nation.

On land, on sea or on deck, Sail Philadelphia is an exciting way to celebrate the unofficial kickoff of summer in the city!
