Food, Fun and Trains at Reading Terminal Market

Reading Terminal Market, one mile from your Edgewater apartment, is known for its food—with over 100 vendors serving everything from cheesesteaks to cannoli to craft beer, it’s not hard to see why! This holiday season, the market will also welcome visitors for another reason.

The market’s Holiday Railroad is now up and running, offering train-loving visitors an exciting, interactive activity for when they’re done their meals, not to mention an eye-opening look back at Reading Terminal’s storied history. The annual train display got a full renovation last year and is back bigger and better than ever.

Twenty-five trains make up the exhibit, scattered across five separate sections. For history lovers, their favorite will likely be the 1930s Reading Terminal Market display, which recreates the railroad that once ran right above where the modern market now stands. The Underground is a diorama that connects the market with the nearby Market-Frankford Line’s 11th Street station. The Pennsylvania Dutch countryside is also featured, with one display that cuts through Amish farms, which supply many of the vendors at today’s market. The Olde English Railway depicts a small island in England and, of course, the holiday season is the focus of the North Pole, as the Santa Trolley Shuttle carries passengers to see Santa Claus.

Seeing the trains chugging throughout the market isn’t all visitors can do; with the fully interactive display, they actually control the trains’ movements, lights and sounds. Little ones will love the flashing lights and winding tracks, though anyone who appreciates holiday train displays will be impressed by what Reading Terminal Market has put together.

The market is also a prime spot for holiday gifts. Many vendors sell pre-packaged foods, gift baskets, books and candles and many other items that can help you check folks off of your holiday shopping lists. And with the market decked out from corner to corner with decorations and lights, this is a must-see this holiday season!
