Where to Celebrate Mardi Gras in Philly

Mardi Gras

While New Orleans is the place to be on Mardi Gras, if you can’t make it to The Big Easy this month, you still have plenty of ways to celebrate the big day here in Philly! Lots of local bars and restaurants are paying tribute to the festive holiday with food and drink specials. While colorful beads, creative cocktails and Creole-inspired dishes can make any night a success, another way to celebrate Mardi Gras is through music!

From jazz to R&B and everything in between, music is a major part of the Mardi Gras festivities in New Orleans, which is why World Café Live’s annual Mardi Gras celebration puts music front and center. Held March 5 at the famed music center, six blocks from your Edgewater apartment, the Mardi Gras Spectacular has been delighting local audiences for 35 years. The event features music by the Wild Bohemians, whose repertoire is entirely modeled after the music of Louisiana. Music lovers can enjoy Dixieland and Cajun and even a specialty genre the Bohemians term the Swamp Stomp. The band features award-winning musicians who all play in other groups but who come together each year—nearly 20-people strong!—for the popular show.

While music is the focus of the World Café Live celebration, food and drinks also abound! The venue’s Upstairs Live café features everything from starters to salads to sandwiches. A rotating draft list and dozens of bottled brews, wines and cocktails will keep the party going. And you don’t even have to leave your seat—as the café serves directly to patrons during shows!

If you can’t get to Bourbon Street, you can still don your beads and your most colorful outfit and head over to Walnut Street to party like you’re down on the Bayou!
